Pacific Dance NZ Movement

Just for YOU….

#PACIFICDANCENZMOVEMENT

Pacific Dance NZ have embarked on a journey of setting world records with our traditional dances.  Earlier this month during Fiji Language Week we set a world first record with having over 350 people online performing a contemporary ‘Meke’ with our Artist in Residence 2021, Alipate Traill. The response to the online ‘Meke’ was overwhelming given that we had people joining in from Europe and the USA to participate.  There was a dance collective from Laie, Hawaii online dancing as well as the Te Mana Performing Arts Academy from West Auckland leading the dance.

We will attempt to better that record and convene and continue to grow our international community to perform the ‘Siva Samoa’ under the guidance of choreographer, dancer and former Miss Samoa Cilla Brown.

There are a number of collectives and performing arts academies and dance schools that are dedicated to teaching traditional Samoan Siva, but Cilla Brown will guide you through a ‘contemporary siva’ routine that is short and fun.

“Following our Fijian Meke, its only fitting that the Samoan Siva be added to these challenges and World First records that Pacific Dance NZ is setting.  While we are in lockdown here in Tamaki Makarau and engaging with our students and audiences online, I thought why not before everyone else sets the records.  We want to be first in the world, and the challenge that Pacific Dance NZ will lay down following our event opens it up for others to do the same.  Not only is it a lot of fun, but it is a great way of keeping our cultures alive and at top-of-mind in the dynamic world we live in where we are constantly bombarded with other cultures and not our own.  it is up to people like myself and organisations such as PDNZ to continue to encourage and put our cultures up on these public platforms”

Pacific Dance NZ will lay down a ‘CHALLENGE’ to other dance, arts and cultural organisations and collectives to continue the #PACIFICDANCENZMOVEMENT and out-do the record around the world.
